AWS Basic Support: What Every AWS Account Gets for Free
AWS Basic Support is the free support tier automatically included with every AWS account — you never sign up for it and you can never remove it. It covers 24/7 customer service for account and billing questions, access to AWS documentation and community forums, the AWS Health Dashboard, and a core subset of AWS Trusted Advisor checks. What it does not include is the ability to open technical support cases with AWS engineers; for that, you need a paid plan.
What Basic Support actually is
Amazon Web Services (AWS) structures its support offering as five tiers: Basic, Developer, Business, Enterprise On-Ramp, and Enterprise. Many study resources describe “four primary” plans — that’s the four classic tiers, with Enterprise On-Ramp added later as a fifth tier sitting between Business and Enterprise. Basic sits at the bottom of the ladder and is unique in two ways: it costs nothing, and it applies to every AWS account from the moment the account is created.
Because it’s free and universal, Basic Support defines the baseline that every other plan builds on. When the CLF-C02 exam asks “which benefit is only available on plan X,” the real question is usually “what does X add beyond Basic?”
What’s included with Basic Support
Basic Support gives every account holder:
- 24/7 access to customer service for account and billing questions. This is the detail people miss most often: even with no paid plan, you can contact AWS about an unexpected charge, a billing dispute, an account access problem, or a payment issue — around the clock, at no cost. Billing and account support is never paywalled.
- AWS documentation, whitepapers, and support forums. Self-service resources, including AWS re:Post (the community question-and-answer service), are open to everyone.
- The AWS Health Dashboard. This includes the public Service Health Dashboard view showing the operational status of AWS services across Regions, plus a personalized view of health events that affect your own resources.
- Core AWS Trusted Advisor checks. Trusted Advisor is the service that inspects your account against best practices in categories like cost optimization, security, fault tolerance, performance, and service limits. On Basic (and Developer), you get only the core checks — a small set covering service quotas and a handful of foundational security checks, such as whether your Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) buckets have open permissions, whether security groups allow unrestricted access on risky ports, and whether multi-factor authentication (MFA) is enabled on the root user. The full library of checks requires Business Support or higher.
What’s not included — and why it matters
The defining limitation of Basic Support is that you cannot open a technical support case. If your application is throwing errors, an instance won’t boot, or you need architectural guidance, there is no channel to ask AWS engineers for help. There are no response-time targets of any kind, no phone or chat access for technical issues, no third-party software support, and no access to a Technical Account Manager (TAM).
Here’s the mental model that keeps the tiers straight:
| Question type | Can a Basic-only account get AWS help? |
|---|---|
| ”Why was I charged $400 this month?” | Yes — billing support is free, 24/7 |
| ”I’m locked out of my account” | Yes — account support is free, 24/7 |
| ”Is us-east-1 having an outage?” | Yes — AWS Health Dashboard |
| ”Am I hitting a service quota?” | Yes — core Trusted Advisor checks |
| ”Why is my EC2 instance unreachable?” | No — technical cases require a paid plan |
| ”How should I architect this workload?” | No — guidance starts with Developer |
If a scenario involves money or account access, Basic covers it. If it involves technology, it doesn’t.
Basic vs. the paid tiers at a glance
Everything in Basic carries upward — every paid plan includes billing support, forums, the Health Dashboard, and at least the core Trusted Advisor checks. What the paid tiers layer on top:
- Developer adds business-hours email access to Cloud Support Associates for technical questions.
- Business adds 24/7 phone, chat, and email access to Cloud Support Engineers, the full set of Trusted Advisor checks, third-party software support, and a less-than-one-hour response target for a production system down.
- Enterprise On-Ramp and Enterprise add faster business-critical response targets and access to Technical Account Managers (pooled for On-Ramp, designated for Enterprise).
For the feature-by-feature breakdown of all five tiers, see the comparison in AWS Support plans compared.
How the CLF-C02 exam tests this
- The free-billing-help scenario. A customer with no paid support plan has a question about an unexpected charge, and the question asks what their options are. The trap answers imply they must buy a plan or wait for business hours; the correct answer is that account and billing support is available 24/7 to all customers at no cost.
- The “which plan is automatic and free” identification. The exam describes a plan included with every account, limited to customer service, account/billing support, the Service Health Dashboard, and core Trusted Advisor checks — and asks you to name it. Any mention of “no additional cost” or “included automatically” points to Basic.
- The exclusion pattern. A question lists several support features and asks which are NOT available on Basic. Anything involving technical cases, Cloud Support Engineers, full Trusted Advisor, response-time targets, or TAMs is the answer.
- The Trusted Advisor tier check. A scenario needs the full set of Trusted Advisor checks, and Basic (or Developer) is offered as a distractor — both tiers only get core checks, so Business is the minimum correct answer.
All four patterns are easy to drill with Cloud Practitioner practice questions — once the money-versus-technology split is reflexive, Basic questions become free points.
Quick reference
- Basic Support is free, automatic, and included with every AWS account — it can’t be declined or upgraded away.
- It includes 24/7 customer service for account and billing questions only — never technical troubleshooting.
- Self-service resources (documentation, whitepapers, AWS re:Post forums) come with every account.
- The AWS Health Dashboard, including the Service Health Dashboard view, is available on Basic.
- Trusted Advisor on Basic is limited to the core checks (service quotas + basic security); full checks start at Business.
- No technical support cases, no response-time targets, no phone/chat technical access, no TAM.
- Exam shorthand: money and account problems = free help for everyone; technology problems = paid plan required.
