Why a refresh rate mismatch causes flicker
The refresh rate is how many times per second the video source redraws the image, measured in hertz (Hz). The graphics card generates its signal at whatever rate the operating system is configured for, and the monitor must lock onto that timing to draw a stable picture. When the OS is set to a rate the monitor can’t properly synchronize with — say the panel is driven at a rate outside its supported list, or a marginal mode negotiated over an adapter — the monitor repeatedly loses and reacquires sync. On screen that looks like visible flickering, rolling, or brief blanking.
The fix is configuration, not hardware: open the OS display settings (in Windows, Settings > System > Display > Advanced display), check the current refresh rate, and select a rate the monitor’s specifications list as supported — typically 60 Hz as the safe universal value, or the panel’s native rate such as 120 Hz or 144 Hz. If the correct rate isn’t offered in the dropdown, that’s usually a driver or cable-capability problem, which leads to the next two sections.
Flicker that starts after a driver update: roll it back first
When a monitor worked flawlessly until a graphics driver update was installed and began flickering immediately afterward, the update itself is the prime suspect, and the first move is to roll the driver back — not to swap cables or monitors. Windows keeps the previous driver version for exactly this scenario: open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, open the GPU’s Properties, and use Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab. This restores the last known-good driver in one step and immediately confirms or rules out the update as the cause.
Rolling back first follows sound troubleshooting logic: the driver update is the one thing that changed, reverting it is fast and non-destructive, and it tests the most probable cause before you spend time on anything physical. If the rollback cures the flicker, wait for a fixed driver release or install a stable older version from the vendor. If flicker persists on the known-good driver, move on to cables and hardware. Cables, connectors, and interference
A video cable that is loose, kinked, pinched, or damaged produces intermittent signal loss that shows up as random flicker, sparkles, or momentary blackouts — often worsening when the cable is bumped or the desk vibrates.
